Stage 1 – The Rules of Catan

For the full details of the ingame rules, please refer to the video above. Below is a short summery of the bare essentials of the game.

Resources
Catan has a total of 5 resources. It’s best if you build the starting two settlements on all 5 type of resources. Early in the game it’s important to gather Lumber(Forest), Bricks(Hills), Wool(Pasture) and Grain(Fields). For late game it’s important to gather a lot of Iron Ore. The best field to gather Iron Ore(Mountains) is the “5” field on a standard board. Make sure you upgrade this settlement to a city, so you get double resources.

Best spots
The best spots are: Brick(8) + Iron(5) + Grain(10) & Lumber (8) + Wool (10) + Wool (11) (example, maps are randomized).
Securing these spots allow you to gather up all 5 types or resources. There are many good spots. The game marks the best spots with a green settlement.

Victory Points
To win a game, you will need to have a total of 10 victory points. The following actions will give you Victory Points:
Settlement – 1 VP
City – 2 VP
Longest Road – 2 VP (Starting at a minimum of 5 uninterrupted connected roads. E.g, no forks or cities on the road)
Largest Army – 2 VP (3 or more required)
Victory Point Card = 1 VP

Buying Stuff
Settlement = 1 Grain, 1 Brick, 1 lumber and 1 Wool
City = 3 Ore and 2 Grain
Road = 1 Brick and 1 lumber
Development Card = 1 Ore, 1 grain and 1 wool

There is a maximum of 5 settlements that can be build at the same time. You will need to upgrade to a City before you can build another settlement.
There is also a maximum of 5 cities you can build.

Resources required to build.

Development Cards
There are a few types of development cards, these are:
– Knight. Replace the Robber on the field. Having the largest amount of knights (starting from 3) will grant you 2 Victory Points
– Years of Plenty. Pick any 2 resources from the back
– Monopoly. Select a resource and obtain all the cards of this resource type from your fellow players.
– Road building. Build 2 roads.
– Victory Point. 1 Victory point.

Trading
You can trade either with the bank or with a fellow player. Always try to trade with a 1:1 ratio with a fellow player.
Trading with the bank is done at a 4:1 ratio. You will need to provide 4 of the same resource, in trade for 1 resource of your choice.
A better deal can be truck if you obtain a harbor with a “?”next to it. This is a general harbor, and allows you to trade with a 3:1 ration against the bank.
If you build a settlement near a dock with a specific resource on it (Lumber for example) you can trade at a 2:1 ration.

Winning the game
There are a few ways to win the game. It’s most likely to win the game with:
– A mix of settlements and cities, combined with The Longest Road. A few examples to win are:
1. City + City + City + City + Longest Road = 10 points
2. City + City + City + Settlement + Settlement = 10 points
3. City + City + City + Settlement + VP Card = 10 points
4. Settlement + Settlement + Settlement + Settlement + Settlement + VP Card + Longest Road + Largest Army = 10 points

Stage 2 – The Trophies & The Bug

The trophies are pretty much straight forward. You will need to win a total of 100 games and acquire 1000 victory points during the games.
There are also a few trophies linked to certain victory conditions. For example only winning with settlement or Cities, with the longest road and the largest army.
All trophies can be obtained offline. There is an online game mode in case you want to play with random people or some friends! Cross-play in enabled, playing with other platforms is possible.

The Bug
There is a bug in version 1.00. This allows you to win games in quick succession. When you win a game, press “quit game” then press “resume game” again. This will put you at the previous game, just before winning. Win the game once again and repeat the steps. See the video below for details.
